Can we know peace in this life? Is there a peace that can protect our minds from fear and anxiety? Is there a peace that is more than merely an avoidance of conflict? The bible promised peace like a river to those who paid attention to God’s commands, but what of those who have failed? Grace restores what sin has stolen and this is no less true in regard to the promise of peace. Here is a peace that is more than the peace of compromise at any price- a false peace that may look sound on the outside but on the inside is severely compromised. When we fail to trust in the present reign of Christ and instead look to what we can devise to secure ourselves then we should not be surprised when sooner or later the cracks appear. The peace that Jesus promised is not subject to catastrophic failure but is rock solid when everything else is falling down around us. God has made such peace at great personal cost. True peacemaking lives out of, and bears witness to, the peace of the cross - a peace that is beyond anything the world can comprehend, but a peace that can steady our hearts in the midst of great threat and turmoil.
