Jesus leaves his peace as a legacy to the church. He is the source of peace, goodness, blessing to the church. This peace, as Calvin explained it, is the serene countenance of God. The enemy is at the door, the ruler of this world is coming. We do not see the spiritual battle going on all around us. The prince of this world, the prince of darkness is coming dragging along with him his hellish weapons: betrayal, denial, desertion, injustice, violence, cruelty, death. But Jesus through his obedience and love of his father at the cross has given us his peace, and the assurance that he has been victorious over all the powers of hell. Scripture references include John 14:27-31, Numbers 6:24-26, John 17:5, Isaiah 40:1-2, and John 13:1.
