Significance/Meaning of the Burnt Offering
1) Acceptance before God requires atonement for one’s sins.
Atonement involves: a) removal of sin b) appeasement of wrath
2) Atonement only occurs through identification with a blameless sacrifice whose blood is shed in your place.
The animal of the burnt offering was a ransom for the worshiper. The sins of the worshiper were transferred to the animal and it died as a substitute in place of the worshiper.
Leaning the hand taught the principle of being identified with the sacrifice by faith so that the benefits of the sacrifice are appropriated.
The animal was a type of the sinless Son of God. Jesus alone could make the atoning sacrifice because he was without sin.
3) This costly sacrifice results in the Lord’s favor toward the offerer.
For the Christian – as a type of Christ, the burnt offering pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins” – Rom 3:25
