We are grateful for another opportunity to come to the Lord's Table. As we prepare our hearts to come to the Supper, I want to open up the words of the apostle Paul in his epistle to the Romans. These words were written so that believers might better know the nature of Christ's incredible work of redemption. Here we see the much-misunderstood doctrine that Jesus Christ came into the world – sinners to save. However, that truth makes another truth absolutely necessary – namely that Jesus Christ died for the ungodly. That should go without saying, but it produces a controversy in the heart of multitudes. Why? Because we tend to think that Jesus came to save those who are worthy of salvation. But that is absurd, because that would be saying that Jesus came to save those who don't need saving. I open up this text by simply laying out what it actually says, and then by developing what it actually means. I close by addressing its significance for all those who have the privilege of coming to the Lord's Table. My intent is to prepare us to come to the Lord's Supper in a profitable manner. May the Lord be pleased to bless His word to our hearts!
