Daniel 7 is in the genre of apocalyptic. While this genre is not present today in everyday writing, it would have been quite familiar to people in Daniel's time. It is a kind of writing that encourages those who are struggling under persecution or captivity. It encourages God's faithful people to endure and persevere because there is reason to be optimistic about the future and present evils are not forever.
The main message of this passage is that earthly kingdoms, both good and evil, will rise and fall, but God is on His throne and His kingdom will come and last forever under the power and authority of Jesus.
