For the Jew and the Greek of that day, the language of John initially would have allowed them to place their own ideas into the text in such a way that they would not have been un-approving of the content of the first 13 verses of this book. They could see the Word as a poetic way of speaking of God or of the universal mind or of the reason that governs all life. They could concede that this is the Word that exist before all else and the Word that shapes all creation. They would intellectually be satisfied that this word is the principle of life and light in men and the basis upon which they come from intellectual, spiritual and moral darkness into the light. They would agree that men reject the principles of this word regularly but that those who embrace they become Son's of the Word, Son's of God. All this would appeal to their sense of religious and intellectual enlightenment. But then they would read verse 14… and a shift would take place in their conception of the text.
Take note of this again. Jesus most radical impact on people was that he threatened their comfortable theologies and ideologies with a bracing revelation. God had come before them in the flesh. He had invaded their world, their space and in the process he destroyed all their religious pretenses. He was real and He was the real God. And people could not handle that reality so they sought to destroy it.
