She was faced with an impossible choice; either she would have to die so her child could live, or her child would have to die so she could live. What did she choose? What would you choose? In the same way, when God chose to save fallen people, He did it knowing that Christ would have to die in order for His children to live. Christ in the manger is evidence of God's gracious decision.
