Psalm 121 expresses the psalmist's confidence in God's protection of His own life and the life of God's people as they make what would often have been a hazardous journey to Jerusalem for the festivals of worship and sacrifice. Psalm 122 celebrates his glad anticipation of gathering with God's people in the Lord's house in the Holy City and praying for the peace of Jerusalem, the city he loved. We have another who longed over Jerusalem - a city that failed again and again to know the way of peace. This One who wept over the city of God gives us a confidence through the gospel of peace that God will bring us gladly before His presence and that he has answered the psalmist's prayer for the peace of Jerusalem (the city that was meant to point to Him) in a way that transcends and surpasses all the hopes and expectations of those who longed for the consolation of Israel.
