God has given us the gift of his Son. His presence is our present. God with us. This is good news. It is God news. Your best gift this Christmas is not wrapped up in paper and bows, it's wrapped up in the Lord Jesus! A Christian will never walk alone. He or she can never be alone. He is with us to the very end of the age. God with us and for us so we can be with God. He came down from heaven to bring us to heaven. John Wesley died with this on his lips, and let us live with it on our hearts—"The best of all is God is with us." As has been said before, we fly to heaven on two wings: Faith and repentance. We also need the two wings of a sense of the transcendence and immanence of God. The terms transcendence and immanence designate two kinds of relationships between God and humans. As John Frame writes, "In general, to say that God is transcendent is to say that he is exalted, above and beyond us. To say that God is immanent is to say that He is present in time and space, that He is near us." Christian cathedrals were built to instill a sense of awe in the transcendence of God. Great care and thought went into the design. The designers wanted a form that would give people a sense of the loftiness of God, of the otherness of God. Protestants have had less resources to do the same, especially now with high energy costs. But the chief promise of the covenant is the Lord's word, "I will be with you." (Gen. 21:22)
