This week we will be celebrating Christmas, the birth, incarnation, and coming of our Lord Jesus. So often we go to those texts in Matthew and Luke that speak of the birth of Christ, or to Isaiah 7 and 9. All beautiful texts about Christ's birth. Sadly, we can be tempted to forget that the coming of our Lord goes much further than the Gospels and the Book of Isaiah. The birth and coming of our Redeemer starts all the way back in the Book of Genesis. Creation had a telos in Christ. With the Fall we have the announcement that the woman will bear a Seed who will conquer the enemy and will restore what was lost. So in our sermon today, titled "The Coming & Conquest of the Lion," we will go back to Genesis, not Genesis 3 (though that is very appropriate) but to Genesis 49, which further develops the promise found in Genesis 3:15.
