As a New Year fast approaches, many Christians are filled with fear, guilt, and gloom because of past sins and failures. This outlook is unfortunate because it is unnecessary. It is due to ignorance or unbelief of the fact that Jesus has already won the victory for us 2,000 years ago! Christians can, and still do, sin. But the good news of God's Word is that there is a “land of beginning again.” God is a God of mercy, and He waits to forgive, restore, and re-commission.
Jeremiah the prophet went down to the potter's house and watched as a spoiled vessel was formed anew. God meant this as an object lesson to Israel. He had a gracious purpose in re-making this ruined nation in His hand.
Often hopelessness, discouragement, and a lack of faith lead to sin (Jer. 18:12; Rom. 14:23). We must have faith in God as the God of “second chances.” The approaching New Year can be a new beginning for a man if he will only meet God on His terms. He can forgive and re-make, even though one be “marred” by sin and failure. He can wipe the slate clean instantly!
Why can we be certain of this? Because there was One Who was “marred” by sin 2,000 years ago (Isa. 52:14); but on the third day He was “re-made” when God raised Him from the dead!
