The Shepherds' experiences included the appearance of an angel. Their experiences also included the hearing of the angel's message. Considered is the nature and subject of the angel's message. Its nature is 'good news.' Its subject is 'a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.' The response of the shepherds to the message was prompt, urgent and earnest. They did not procrastinate, become distracted or resist. There response serves to remind us that a great extent of our problems is rooted in our sluggishness, stubbornness and disobedience to what we already plainly know. Most often the issue is not a matter of ignorance. It is a matter of responding to the clearly marked path of duty. The prompt, resolute, energetic response of the shepherds is our example.
