While we may take this as a given, we need to understand the traditions and teaching of the day in which the recipients of the letter to the Hebrews were told that Jesus is superior to angels. Angels were considered to be an advisory council assisting God in the ruling of His creation, controlling climates, season changes, directing the heavenly bodies, and reigning right down to every movement of every single blade of grass on the earth. As a man then Jesus would have been inferior to the angels. But a right view of angels and a right view of Christ show us Who Jesus is and always has been. In our text we learn what it means that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, the firstborn over creation, and we see definitive Scriptural affirmation of the truth that Jesus is God.
