The gem of Christological truth found in II Corinthians 8:9 occurs in the context of the very effort that was Paul's primary response to the appeal of Galatians 2:10, 'remember the poor.' Whereas in I Corinthians 16 Paul had written of preparation for a benevolent offering for the needy Jerusalem brethren, II Corinthians 8 addresses the completion of that offering. He begins by writing of the worthy example of the Macedonian churches. But, at verse 8, which is parenthetical in nature, Paul sets forth the ultimate example of sacrificial giving. The gracious condescension of Christ the Son in the incarnation is the supreme act of self giving love which should constrain the Corinthians to 'abound in this gracious work.'
