The story of Samson covers four chapters in the book of Judges. Samson's story is both instructional and at its core a tragedy brought about by sin. Here is a young man who was blessed beyond measure. His own birth being announced in what many feel is a Christophany, an appearance by Jesus Himself (whose name would only be described as wonderful). Samson had amazing strength, being able to tear a lion in half and also strike down 1000 men with the jawbone of a donkey. He judged Israel for 20 years. Yet, the story most remember deals with Samson, humiliated, eyes gouged out, and entertainment for the Philistine leaders. Samson had a heart plagued by desire and defiance. He ignored the instruction of his parents and upbringing, violated his Nazarite Vow, and sought the desires of his eyes. His marriage to a pagan woman as well as his lust for prostitutes led to his downfall. While we cannot thwart God's plan, our sin brings much suffering to others.
