We tend to think about the sacraments as things we do. For those who grew up Baptist, we tend to think that baptism is where I profess my faith.
And once we embrace infant baptism, we tend to think that baptism is where we bring our children to God. That still focuses on what we do.
But as we’ve seen over the last couple weeks, baptism is fundamentally something God does. In baptism God saves us. Just like in the Word God saves us. Or even by faith God saves us.
Just making a profession of faith doesn’t save you. Jesus tells us that many will say on that day, “Lord, Lord” – but Jesus will answer, “I never knew you.”
Because salvation belongs to the LORD. God is the one who saves. And he saves us through his Word – through the sacraments – through prayer. He saves us by grace; he saves us by faith. And he saves us for good works.
Today we are looking at another part of the way that God saves us. God saves us through the Lord’s Supper. As Paul will say, “the bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” As we share in Christ’s body and blood, we partake of his life.
Our Shorter Catechism says that the sacraments become effectual means of salvation not from any virtue in them, or in him that does administer them, but only by the blessing of Christ, and the working of his Spirit, in them that by faith receive them.
So, the Lord’s Supper saves us by the blessing of Christ and the working of his Spirit in those people who receive the Lord’s Supper by faith....
