Parable of Hidden Treasure (Mt 13:44) Intro: Our Lord explains & applies our universal longing to find hidden treasure.
Exposition: There were many 'unclaimed deposits' in the earth & stories about finding them frequently circulated.
Doctrine: Though surpassingly valuable treasure of kingdom is now hidden, those who find it will joyfully give all they have to gain its riches for themselves
1. Nature of God's Kingdom in World: Hidden Treasure ''Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.' But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit' (1Cor 2:9-10).
2. People of God's Kingdom in World: Joyful Finder It is his glory to hide his kingdom from a proud world & reveal it to his joyful children through his spirit. 'In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit & said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven & earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise & prudent & revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight'' (Lk 10:21)
Appl: Of what value is kingdom to us
1. To those who possess the treasure (quotes from Augustine, Flavel, Calvin) 'They shall partake of the abundance of the seas & of treasures hidden in the sand' (Dt 33:18-19).
2. To those w/o the treasure 'He has no form or comeliness; & when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him' (Is 53:2; cf 2Cor 4:3). But in him are hidden untold treasures & a kingdom.
