When an angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds on the hills near Bethlehem, he calmed their terror with good tidings of great joy: news calculated to produce profound gladness, wholesome happiness, and lasting blessing.
Here we observe the pursuit of joy (the understandable desire of men to be happy, and how they pursue it, especially during the Christmas season); the obstacles to joy (the means that men often use are broken cisterns, because they do not address the issue of sin); the heart of joy (God's declaration that the promised Saviour - Christ the Lord - has come into the world, and in him forgiveness of sins and peace with God is proclaimed); and, the offer of joy (this good news is for all people, without restriction).
Have you and I received this joy that is in and by and through Christ Jesus? If so, do we bear this joy in Christ with us wherever we go? And, are we ready and willing to communicate this joy in Christ, speaking for our Master and pointing men to him as the source of peace with God and true, lasting joy?
