In the churches of Galatia in the early first century a new "gospel" of faith-plus works was gaining circulation. The apostle blasts this "distort[ed] gospel of Jesus Christ. The Galatians should believe nothing but what he had earlier preached to them. And in commending his gospel he tells the Galatians to consider the source. So at the end of the first chapter Paul tells part of his story and why it should matter to the Galatians and to us.
