Up to this point in Acts, the people had supported the apostles, so much so that the Sanhedrin feared to punish them because they feared an uprising of the people. But now, many of Stephen's fellow Hellenist Jews turn on him, removing the one hurdle in front of the Sanhedrin and their willingness to clamp down on the followers of "the Way."
Stephen's address gives an amazing summation of the history of the nation of Israel. And he focuses on the sovereignty of God over that history, but he also especially focuses on God's willingness to be with His people long before there ever even was a Temple. The Temple did not limit God's presence beyond God's willingness for it do so.
At the beginning of his address, Stephen is establishing common ground with the Sanhedrin, but by the end, he's accusing them of false worship and idolatry.
