We saw last time how man is created in the image of God. God is infinite – he is not bounded by space or time. But he has made us as finite pictures of himself. He sees all things – and so he gave us eyes to see some things. He knows all things – and so he gave us the ability to know some things as well.
Likewise, just as God has freedom and sovereignty, so also do we – but likewise on a finite scale.
In fact, without the eternal sovereignty and freedom of God, there would be no freedom and sovereignty at all for us.
We read in Genesis 3 that Eve exercised her freedom and sovereignty by disobeying God. There is something unfathomable about all this. We are tainted by sin, so perhaps we are not surprised that Eve would take and eat. But Adam and Eve were good. They were surrounded by the goodness and favor of God – they were untainted by sin and misery.
Why would they listen to the serpent? Why would they disobey their God and Father?
They were free – and they used their freedom in rebellion against God...
