The Corinthians had become spiritually lazy and prideful. They were in danger of falling and Paul wanted to warn them so that they wouldn't fall. He could see it coming in this church because he had read the Old Testament and he knew how the nation of Israel had fallen away from the Lord. The Corinthians were clearly headed for trouble and they couldn't see it. They needed someone wiser who had their best interests at heart to warn them to change their ways. So, Paul proceeded to bring up the example of Israel – of how they lost their way and what terrible things happened to them as a result. It was his love for the flock that caused Paul to be so forthright with them.
