The Bible warns us repeatedly about the danger of loving money. Now, money itself is not evil, it is the love of money that is the root of all evil. The love of money can lead you to forsake values and character while pursuing a lifestyle that only brings heartache and frustration.
I mentioned last week that the love of money is dealt with in the 10th commandment, “Thou shalt not covet.” To covet means that you want what someone else has; it’s greed. Most people think that if they have more money they will have less problems. It’s the American way; just throw some more money at it!
Money does not solve all problems. This is the point of the passage here in 1 Timothy 6. Paul was instructing Timothy to deal with the money issue because it is a relevant subject.
We have an obligation to earn money, provide for our family, and manage what we have as stewards for the Lord. But we will get into trouble or err when we are led astray from the faith by our insatiable desire for money and things. The love of money will tear away at the spiritual priorities because you cannot serve God and money!
What are you pursuing today? Are you pursuing the dollar sign or the cross? There’s a saying that you become what you worship. You get what you want, and what you want gets you.
