This parable follows that of the Sower in which Jesus compares the declaration the Word with a farmer sowing seed in the ground. In this parable Jesus shows that he is at work wherever the Word is proclaimed. Therefore when we gather in worship it is not a mere routine on our part; it is the activity of Christ. Satan is also at work - God's enemy who comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. Christ's servants have a holy desire to uproot the 'plants' of Satan, but Jesus warns that it is often impossible to distinguish one from another. (That does not forbid correction by church discipline - Jesus and his apostles require that). Instead of judging one another we ought to examine ourselves - and there are marks of grace by which we may know whether we are in Christ or not. At the end of the Day Christ will make the separation. He has been appointed to that task by the Father, and he is well qualified to carry it out.
