Many Gospel promises so clearly revealed by Christ and the Apostles were hinted at by Old Testament writers.
When the full revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ the Redeemer was accomplished, then all the promises could be fully manifest for us to enjoy!
These were things that prophets and kings searched diligently to understand. Praise God, in Christ even the commonest of Saints now has the unsearchable riches displayed openly in Scripture! As Christ rejoiced, these things are now revealed to babes!
God promised in Malachi to spare His people like a father spares his own son who serves him.
No doubt the readers thought this but a simile; but now we have revealed the startling truth: that God spares His people like sons because we ARE His sons by adoption!
Furthermore, we are sons who have served Him, because all the obedience of Christ has been assigned to us! Indeed, we have been clothed in garments of Salvation and cloaks of Righteousness in Jesus. Now, we are "well-beloved" sons who are well-pleasing to God for Jesus sake.
So Malachi's simile was actually a veiled promise of the adoption by God of His people as sons.
Paul often uses the word for male child when he describes this adoption. The male child was entitled to better privileges than any other: he was entitled to filial love of and by the father, to chastening for his profit, and to the inheritance.
By this adoption we are made brethren of Christ Himself. He was made like unto us in the incarnation, that He might suffer death for our sakes and lead many sons into Glory!
God the Father spared not His own Son that we might be spared eternal judgment. Here is the greatest love!
