The Spirit had opened an effectual door for the gospel in Ephesus and Paul was committed to remaining there until he sensed that his work was finished. At the same time, he was anxious to complete his long-standing project of collecting an offering from the churches of Asia, Macedonia and Achaia for the suffering saints in Jerusalem. And so, when he departed Ephesus Paul immediately set about that work, sailing across the Aegean and traveling south through Macedonia, visiting all the churches until he arrived in Achaia. Wintering in Corinth, Paul departed in the spring, retracing his steps northward because of a Jewish plot, but never losing sight of his goal of delivering the Gentile offering to the Jewish mother church in Jerusalem.
