The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of the Huguenots and the later French Revolution were truly the rage of Antichrist. Some two million men, women and children of all ages were slaughtered. Christianity was mocked: A prostitute was enshrined in Notre Dame Cathedral as the "Goddess of Reason" and made the object of orgiastic worship. A donkey was given the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Day Sabbath was abolished -- even speaking or writing the words were illegal. Street and town names with Christian connotations were changed. Children could not be given Biblical names. All traces of Christianity were wiped away, replaced by atheism and its progeny, terror.
It was humanism in full bloom.
A century before it happened, some Reformed theologians saw the French Revolution predicted in the book of Revelation.

"And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth" (Hebrews 11:37-38).
