Imagine a couple, madly in love, committing themselves to each other in marriage. They fully intend to love each other for the rest of their lives. They fully desire to love each other for the rest of their lives. Yet, if both were honest, and understood fallen human nature accurately, they would confess, "I'm afraid I can't love you." If, even under the very best conditions, the very best of human beings are unable to do even this one thing; what hope have the rest of us of pleasing a holy God with our lives? Surely as we look at our own incapabilities, even in loving those dearest to us, we should see our desperate need for Jesus. Our desperate need for a man who has completely pleased God, to stand before God on our behalf. |
