While there is a Norwegian myth that the animals were able to talk the night that the Lord Jesus Christ was born, there is nothing in the Bible to support such an idea. However, the Bible does record a time when an animal was able to express her feelings in human language: the miracle of Balaam's donkey.
Now that Balaam has rejected God's Word, he has begun to be given over to madness. In his mad pursuit of gain, he is resisted by the invisible angel of the Lord. But what Balaam cannot see, his donkey can. And in a remarkable irony, this speechless beast of burden is given the ability to communicate her feelings in human language. By doing so she saves her master's life.
The account of Balaam's donkey offers insight into the animal kingdom and affords an opportunity to look at what separates human beings from the rest of that kingdom according to Scripture.
