In ancient cultures the wreath was given as an award for victory. A laurel wreath was worn by victorious athletes, and an olive wreath by victorious warriors. Against a background of judgment for sin, Isaiah tells his listeners that the Lord Almighty will himself be a glorious crown and a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people. The Aramaic Targums applied this text ultimately to Messiah. The Lord Jesus obtained victories over sin, death, and Satan by way of the cross. He is our Victor and has given us the victory, as the Scriptures proclaim. It is his great victory that makes us more than conquerors and gives us great joy!
