Throughout the Old Testament, and not simply in Psalm 23, the Lord our God presents Himself as the Shepherd of His people, One who also appointed “Under-Shepherds” to care for His flock as well. But because so many of those “Under-Shepherds” proved to be unfaithful, God strongly condemns them in such passages as Ezekiel 34, clearly reminding us of the fact that what God’s people desperately needed was another Shepherd, the Good Shepherd, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the One who, Heidelberg Catechism Question/Answer 31 reminds us, has been “ordained by God the Father and anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our Chief Prophet and Teacher, our Only High Priest, and Our Eternal King!
