Before we deal directly with the text, let’s not forget that the account doesn’t begin here in 1:46. Our story this morning isn’t really about Bethlehem. It ends there, but it starts about nine months earlier, when Mary realizes that she has been chosen by God to give birth to the Messiah. We pick up the story in Luke 1 when she goes to visit Elizabeth, who was herself, pregnant with John the Baptist. When Elizabeth saw Mary, she greeted her with those famous words, (read 1:42). When Mary heard those confirming words, she broke out into song. The words of her song are recorded in Luke 1:46-55. Please note that in this hymn, Mary is not the one being worshiped, Mary is the worshiper. It is a hymn of worship from Mary to God.
