To be sincere we must be free from hypocrisy. The challenge Joshua issued told them that it will cost them some things to serve God. And that if you break your commitment God would punish them. The people responded with determination. So Joshua tested them by telling them to get rid of everything they put before God in their lives. Anything that comes between you and God is a false god.
