We see the first account from Luke dealing with Simon, whom we know as Peter. This is not their first interaction however. In John we saw that Simon and his brother had already interacted with Jesus. But here Luke brings out the point that Simon Peter is a married man, and his mother-in-law is sick with a high fever. What is most evident here is that Jesus proves that He has power over sickness in these passages. But note with me that when Jesus is exercising this power and authority over Satan and Sin and now Sickness, it is not simply for the sake of the defeat of those, but to point to His greater power, which is to Redeem man and Deliver man, from those strongholds into the blessed eternal union with God and Christ. All this display of power only points to His resurrection and ours. Jesus must display His power now over sin and sickness and point to the fact that He is indeed the Resurrection and the Life. He had to be our deliverer as not only fully God, but as perfect man as well. Hebrews 2:14–18 Hodge says "The heathen are “alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is in them.” Hence his frequent prayers for the illumination of his readers; and the supplication of the Psalmist that his eyes might be opened. Hence, also, true conversion is said to be effected by a revelation. Paul was instantaneously changed from a persecutor to a worshipper of Christ, when it pleased God to reveal his Son in him. Those who perish are lost because the god of this world has blinded their eyes so that they fail to see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. It is in accordance with this principle that knowledge is essential to holiness."
