In the readings for this week we see a great contrast, between Jesus, who is born as king, and the false, usurper king Herod. The true king is both the ruler and shepherd of his people. The false king uses his power to steal and kill and destroy. The whole picture speaks of the great spiritual purpose for which Jesus came into the world...to destroy the works of the devil and to thus rescue his flock from the jaws of Satan himself. The Father, who sent Jesus and preserved him for that task, will likewise, through the gift of the Son, keep us against all the schemes of the prince of this world until the last great day
