At first glance this passage appears to move Jesus' discussion in a new direction, but it actually reinforces His primary contention in the larger context. That contention is that earthly-mindedness is pervasive in the human race, for it defines and determines every aspect of human existence in alienation from the life and mind of God. It is not a geographical or cultural phenomenon; neither is it restricted to certain components or spheres of life. Earthly-mindedness is the way a person perceives, thinks, judges, responds, and acts when he exists apart from God, isolated within his own life and mind. A person may be overtly spiritual or religious - even deeply committed to the Christian faith - and yet be earthly-minded. Earthly-mindedness is the darkness of mind and soul that engulfs the person who yet dwells in the "domain of darkness," separated from the life of God in Christ (Eph. 4:17-18). Regardless of how moral, pious, committed and doctrinaire such persons may be, Jesus declared them to have an unsound "eye" that leaves them "full of darkness."
