Christmas forces the entire world's attention on the person and work of Jesus Christ. No matter how we try to avoid it, we can't. Stores can put up "Happy Holidays" but they're still acknowledging a "holy-day." Atheists and pagans can talk about "winter solstice" but they're still surrounded by music, decorations, and festivities that all point to the true reason for the season. Christianity is a global religion and even in countries where Christians are a tiny and persecuted minority, Christmas is still celebrated – sometimes even at great risk. And even the unreligious who focus only on the man with the big red hat can't escape the fact that even the legend of Santa Claus is historically rooted in Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century bishop who ferociously defended the deity of Christ at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. So no matter what, the whole world is confronted with the reality of Jesus Christ every December and that confrontation demands a response to what His person and work mean for our world and lives – and that's what we see in the account of the magi's visit to Bethlehem to meet the Christ-child in our text today.
