Christian baptism is a beautiful symbol of the union between Christ and his people. Baptisms are typically happy and hopeful. They speak of purification and renewal.
The irony is that baptism is beautiful. Like the Lord's Supper—a simple meal of bread and wine—the act of baptism isn't painful or traumatic, but pleasant and refreshing. Why is that?
The mark of our entrance into God's family is peaceful because Christ's baptism was horrendous. Jesus was baptized with water to symbolize his solidarity with the sinners he came to cleanse. But the certainty of another baptism plagued him like a nightmare. "I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished" (Luke 12:50).
Our baptisms symbolize Christ's death (Rom. 6:4) and burial (Col. 2:12). They remind us that Christ was baptized for us.
