Four Rules of Hermeneutics that must be observed in interpreting the Book of Revelations: 1.Scripture must be interpreted in the context it is written 2.Must understand the setting and theme of the scriptures. The book is a church epistle which has as its theme the unveiling of Jesus Christ. Therefore we must properly understand the work of Jesus Christ as the Redeemer and Saviour of His people. We must also understand what a NT church is and Christ program for His church. 3. Must remember that Revelation is both historical and futuristic and that it uses many allegorical and figurative symbols. 4. The Book of Revelation is not a chronological book, but is a given in a synchronous order. Visions and event are not necessarily all in a chronological order, but rather a record of events happening often times at the same time but from different perspective.
