What should be a simple and straightforward answer to how to make decisions has gone terribly wrong in certain evangelical circles. Many Christians have been told repeatedly that God has a wonderful plan for their lives, but then conclude that, for some reason, God is not telling them what His that plan is. So, to figure out God's plan for their lives—to find out that "individual will of God"—they engage in unbiblical practices. In this lesson, we look at such practices, including:
• Bible "dipping" or "diving" • Fleeces • Interpreting circumstances as authoritative guidance • Assuming supernatural leading in the Bible is for today
Sometimes, behind such errors is pride or discontentment. We want to be "great" in God's kingdom in the worst sense of the word. The last thing we want to be is ordinary, just one of millions and millions whom Jesus has saved. But that is what we are. God has called us to the ordinary (1 Thessalonians 4:11). We should never despise everyday Christianity. God has called us to love and obey him. To accept His Word as sufficient and the final authority. To love our neighbor. To be content. And, as we will see in future lessons, to make ordinary decisions in very ordinary ways.
