I. God graciously and sovereignly chose and treasures His people (vv. 6, 7). II. God freely loves His people not because of anything in them (vv. 7,8). A. Most of us love things because they are lovely, something in the object attracts us. But, that is not why God loves us. These three verses are wonderful and listen to the way a few commentators explained God's love. One commentator said why God loved Israel was a "mystery" (NICOT) and another said it was "inscrutable" (TOTC). Still another commentator explained vv. 6-8 as, "Moses here pursues one of the deep mysteries of the entire Bible, i.e., the unexplained, self-motivated love of God for humanity at large and Israel in particular." (EBCR) The older Matthew Poole said of v. 8, "because it pleased him to love you; it was his free choice, without any cause or motive on your part."
B. The reason? "Because the Lord loves you" (love's logic) It is as if to say, "I love you because I love you." Some commentators state there no reason is given – but there is, "because the Lord loves you."
III. God faithfully keeps His gracious free unprompted promises (v. 8). What does this teach us? 1. God wants His people to know He loves them.
2. God wants His people to know that He loves them not because of anything in them.
3. God desires to bless His people as they love and obey Him (vv. 12-16). What should this teaching do to us? •It should humble you. •It should cause you to love Him. •It should motivate you to obey Him. •It should erupt in thanksgiving and praise to God.
