Parents who love their children are careful to discipline them. Is it not striking that prohibitions against loving your children in this way are even written into law in many countries? In fact, it would appear to me that the best way to ruin the whole of society is to raise undisciplined, characterless children who grow up without principle, and then take office in positions that require character, discipline and principled living. Scripture presupposes that any person who is a parent is loving their child enough to see to their discipline. Yet rather than assaulting their children, such parents bring their children up in such a way that those children respect them. This is the fruit of principled discipline. Not only is this true, but it is also true that no parent does a perfect job; yet if guided by Scriptural principle, what they are doing is for the child's good. After all, what Scripture puts before us here is exemplified in the way God deals with His own children, for our good.
