In this passage, the vital union that the people of Christ have with Christ. He is the vine and we are the branches. In Him alone, we have the the energy and the resources to bear much fruit. In Him alone, we can do His will and bring glory to the Father.
The Father also disciplines the true children of God, prunes us, to cleanse us and make us more fruitful. This is a mark of true son-ship, that we undergo the Lord's discipline.
We also see the future separation and damnation of all false professors of Christ. Those who are not truly connected will face the judgment of Christ Himself. We should all examine ourselves and make sure that our faith is genuine and our connection to Christ is vital. There is such a thing as a false faith that does not save. We do not want a false assurance of 'easy-believism.'
