Jesus tells us the devil “was a murderer from the beginning” (Jn 8:43). Through his deception the devil convinced Adam and Eve to cast off God's rule in favor of self-rule. Like our original parents, humanity has since resisted God's rule in favor of self-rule calling it freedom. This is what brought about king Herod's murder of the children. He hoped his murderous net would have caught “he who has been born king of the Jews” (Matt 2:2). Sadly, we are in keeping with this Herodian spirit when we resist Jesus' reign in order to remain enthroned over our own lives.
