Implications of the Covenant: Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac
We return to the expositon of Gn 17. Having seen God's & Abraham's parts in the covenant, we now see how Sarai is also blessed. Her name is changed to Sarah (mother of nations). She will give birth to the promised son. Abraham's responds with laughter: an ambiguous response of a struggling faith. Could not Ishmael be the promised son? No, the son Isaac ("he laughs") will be birthed by Sarah. Isaac will be given the covenant, not Ishmael. Ishmael will be blessed in this age, but the promise of life with God will be Isaac's. Abraham obeys & his household is circumcised: believer & unbeliever alike.
