This morning we shall begin our study of John, chapter 3. Keep in mind, the original letters written by the prophets and apostles did not contain chapters and verses. In order to make its teachings easier to find, around 1227 A.D. an Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton, started to use chapter divisions in the Bible, and in 1382, the Wycliffe English Bible was the first Bible to use chapters.
Then, a Jewish Rabbi named Nathan divided the Hebrew Old Testament into verses in 1449. Beginning with the Geneva Bible, another man named Stephanus used Nathan's verse divisions in 1555 for both the Old and New Testaments.
Therefore, we have the convenience of quoting chapter and verse in our reading and teaching the Scriptures.
