What happened up to this time? The enemies of God and His people have been judged and destroyed (16:17, It is done!”). The great prostitute (ch. 17) or Babylon the great (ch. 18), the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies (19:19), and finally the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan (ch. 20) have been judged and thrown into the lake of fire (19:20; 20:10). One by one, chs. 17-20 describe the judgment and destruction of God’s and His people’s enemies. At the end of ch. 20 we learn that Death and Hades will finally end (20:14). Chapter 21 therefore emerges after the defeat of God’s enemies. All evil and opposition have ceased. The new renewed promised reality dawns upon us. This, my brothers and sisters, is the Saints’ Everlasting Rest. This passage and the rest of the chapter and the following chapter show us the glories to come. An ideal image is given to us — a true image. God with man; world without sin and the effects of sin; and man renewed and glorified.
What does our Lord promise us? I. He promises us His enduring perpetual presence (vv. 3, 7)! II. He promises us a new world no longer tarnished by sin and its effects (vv. 1, 4, 5). III. He will transform us into what He promised ages ago! IV. All these things are CERTAIN and FREE.
