At the end of Genesis 21 we find ourselves at the end of a literary segment of the Scripture story which begins with Abraham acting the part of the coward, but ends with Abraham acting in confidence. Abraham's dealings with the pagan king Abimelech show us something of how the Christian Pilgrim today is to interact with the world around him. Even while engaging in common cultural activities of his day, Abraham was still set apart in the distinctive act of his worship, and considered his true citizenship to be found in heaven. Here we find that even in his interactions with the world around him, Abraham's relationships are primarily redemptive, and show forth the glory of Christ.
