Those who are led by the Spirit of God are Sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption. The Jews already considered themselves to be "Sons of God" because of their heritage. Its usage in the Old Testament indicates one born directly of God as in angels. Here though Paul explains that Sons of God has additional aspects. New Testament Sons of God are those who are reborn by the Spirit of God which is evidenced in their life-style. Believers not only have the rebirth by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9); they are also led by the Holy Spirit. Hence our spirits are reborn as a direct new creation by God.
Paul uses adoption or "sonship" to illustrate the believer's new relationship with God and his or her privileges as part of God's family. In Roman culture, the adopted person lost all rights in his old family and gained all the rights of a birth child and more in his new family. He became a full heir to his new family. And since they chose him they took on special privileges over the natural born children that came by chance into the family. Likewise, when a person becomes a Christian, he or she gains all the privileges and responsibilities of a child in God's family. One of these outstanding privileges is being led by the Spirit (Galatians 4:5–6).
