Synonyms for discern include to discover, notice, differentiate, or judge. Those who gathered that day figured out fairly quickly that something was out of the ordinary but they didn't know what to make of it. They were surrounded by so many things in their own lives that it just didn't make sense. And that is how the world works, it seeks to distract us in any way possible, to numb the pain. We are even at the point of giving participation trophy's away so no one gets their feelings hurt. That's not how life works and it ain't helping the situation any, and God certainly doesn't work that way either. The clutter must be dealt with in order for us to be able to discern properly.
